what is analogy?
definition
An analogy is a comparison used to explain an idea. It is therefore more complex than an extended metaphor or simile because it can simplify a whole concept by using a familiar example to help explain something unknown.

explanation
In this example, the familiar change is the way a caterpillar emerges into a completely different creature and it is a natural process to enable it to fly where before it could only crawl. The writer suggests, by the use of analogy, that the change that is required in a person is similarly very drastic if somebody wants to come out of a place they feel comfortable in. The change might at first seem daunting, if not impossible, but once affected, then forcing yourself out of your comfort zone could cause a person to be suddenly able to go much further than they had ever gone before.
