what is imagery?
definition
Imagery is when words create a picture in your head.
This might conjure up different images for different people, but very rarely do people not imagine something.
She looked as though butter wouldn't melt in her mouth.
explanation
Imagery creates vivid images in your mind. The writer uses lots of details to describe something and appeals to all of the senses e.g. sight, sound, smell, feel and touch. In doing so, the writer connects the reader with past experiences. The extended description clarifies the image in the mind of the reader and evokes personal memories. If the reader has experienced the item being described then they will conjure a positive mental image comprised of a combination of the writer's description and the reader's memory. Thus the writer is able to create a more vivid image in the mind of the reader.
