what is simile?
definition
Simile is comparing one thing to another, usually using the words 'like' or 'as' or 'as if'.
explanation
A simile is a way of comparing one thing to say that it is like another. It is usually easy to spot because of the use of the words "like" or "as". (As opposed to a metaphor in which the comparison exists without the comparison words of "like" or "as".) The effect of using a simile is to conjure up an image in the mind of the reader. It is usually something that is well known or associated with particular symbolism. In this example, Robert Burns compares the depth of his love to a beautiful flower, therefore saying that his love is beautiful. He uses the colour red because it is a strong, passionate colour and is associated with blood as well as passion. Both of these are strong concepts and have lots of powerful associations for the reader. The comparison thus causes the reader to think of a powerful beauty.
Note: This example is particularly strong because it has the added emphasis of repetition and colour to enhance its meaning.
