explanation
A rhyme is pleasing to the human ear and people derive a sense of satisfaction from a rhyming sound. Another source of pleasure out of a rhyme is the satisfaction of having guessed the word prior to reaching it. A poet will use rhyme to help meaning and to guide the reader towards the word before it is reached, as the mind races ahead searching for a word that will fit. On occasions, the writer will use rhyme to counter-balance the displeasure of negative content within the poem as with Wilfred Owen's Dulce et Decorum Est:
Gas! Gas! Quick, boys! – An ecstasy of fumbling,
Fitting the clumsy helmets just in time;
But someone still was yelling out and stumbling,
The content of the poem is very serious but is softened for the reader by the use of pleasing rhyme sounds.
