Onomatopoeia is when a word imitates the sound that it describes.

The word splat actually sounds like the sound of something wet or heavy striking a hard surface. The soft 's' sound at the beginning followed by the hard sound of the 't' at the end of the word as the collision of the objects usually occurs at high speed.
