what is irony?
definition
Irony is an incongruity between what might be expected and what actually occurs, although this is not a completely satisfactory definition because true irony involves some form of deceit, duplicity, or hypocrisy, be it intentional or accidental.
examples
I named my dog - Cat!
And my great Dane is named - Tinkerbell!
And my great Dane is named - Tinkerbell!
explanation
A simple way of putting it is that irony usually signals a difference between the appearance of things and reality. In this example, the dog is obviously a dog and it is clearly not a cat. The act of naming the dog "Cat" creates an incongruity so as to strike the reader/listener that there is some absurdity here. Similarly with the second example, people generally associate a tiny light fairy with the name Tinkerbell whereas a Great Dane is the largest dog possible, thus the name creates a jarring effect and can cause laughter.
